Structured data (JSON-LD and schema.org)

Structured data is machine-readable code, usually JSON-LD using the schema.org vocabulary, that states facts about a page or business, such as its name, address, products, opening hours or FAQs.

How it works

A small script tag in the page holds the facts in a format machines read without guessing: “this is a LocalBusiness, this is its address, these are its FAQs”. Visitors do not see it.

Why it matters for a business

It removes ambiguity about who you are and what you offer. Search engines document how they use it, and clear, consistent facts are easier for any system to quote correctly.

Structured data: common questions

Which schema types should a small business start with?

Organization or LocalBusiness on the home page, and FAQPage on pages that answer common questions. Only mark up facts that are visible on the page.

Will structured data guarantee a mention in AI answers?

No. It makes your facts clearer and easier to verify, which helps, but no markup guarantees a placement.
